Bluewater Panglao: Bohol’s Amuna Escape

Comfort has become a touchstone of this age—these days, more than ever. The quest for comfort, hardwired into humans from birth, is now stronger and fiercer, what with our desire to rise above present-day challenges. This craving often finds its fulfilment in life’s daily pleasures: for instance, in a mouthwatering favorite dish; in an engaging TV series or movie; in an endorphin-laden workout routine; or, at the bottom of a steaming hot cup of Joe, with a well-read book to match.

Then, there are next-level ways to appease the search: picture a tropical beach oasis, bounded by sparkling turquoise waters, cradled within a haven of hospitality. Can you feel the waves of comfort washing over you already?

Located in the laidback municipality of Danao in Bohol, Bluewater Panglao is eager to satiate the comfort we crave, in the brand’s trademark Amuma way.

That sweet, subtle—and safe Amuma

As you would expect from any resort that carries the Bluewater name, the nurturing, comforting Amuma spirit is alive and well at Bluewater Panglao—with an added hint of sweetness brought on by the gentle nature of Boholanons.

As far as the expression of warm Visayan hospitality goes, the Boholanon way is a bit shyer and more subdued, compared to the Cebuano’s typical gregarious graciousness. “But you still see how they go out of their way to please you. No matter what Bluewater property you go to, that’s always the comment: ‘Your staff really takes care of us.’ Even if the hospitality is still a bit unpolished, as it often is in the province, you still will genuinely feel that Amuma, from the heart,” Margie Munsayac, Bluewater Group’s VP for Sales and Marketing, points out.

As any seasoned traveler would tell you, there are few things more comforting than that feeling of being welcomed as a guest to one’s home—that is the “Amuma” welcome; the kind that puts you and your needs first. This is the welcome you receive at Bluewater Panglao.

Of course, these days, comforting care and nurturing hospitality extend to the realm of health and safety. With the Bluewater brand’s BlueCARES program rigidly in place, guests can expect stringent protocols, when it comes to ensuring their wellbeing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. So, you can enjoy your stay fully, with the peace of mind that comes from knowing your safety is Bluewater’s concern.

Destination: Rest and Relaxation

Tempered by the more subtle and sweet demeanor of Bohol’s denizens, the Amuma hospitality takes on an understated, unhurried air at Bluewater Panglao. The result is an ambience which lends itself very nicely to rest and relaxation, in a leisurely, lovely boutique resort.

“Bluewater Panglao is really a very serene place; while it’s far from Alona Beach, it’s still in Panglao. At the same time, we have a big expanse of garden, which gives our guests a very relaxed feeling. It’s a place for them to relax and bring their family. For our local market in Bohol, the resort is a breather from their ordinary lives,” shares Munsayac.

Because it is out of the way from the bustle of Alona Beach, Panglao’s main stretch of (oft-busy and populous) shore, Bluewater Panglao affords its guests the quietness and calmness they desire. And, while its private beachfront is best-suited for diving, the resort still offers all the reverie of an ocean-side retreat.

“Our beachfront is not your traditional beachfront. It’s really more of a dive beachfront, with a very distinct high tide and a very distinct low tide. But our guests… see the blue waters; the sounds and the sights just relax them. We have fixed the beachfront in such a way that our guests can laze around and just enjoy it. And because we have two big swimming pools, the local market really loves it,” Munsayac expounds.

The charms of island life, modernized

Guests of the resort can attest to this fact: Bluewater Panglao brims with all the charms of island living, the modern Filipino way. The hotel now boasts 82 rooms, from the original 54, yet it has managed to maintain its quaint boutique vibe. Each cozy, comfy guestroom is well-equipped with what you would expect from an establishment of a certain ranking—a flat screen TV, a fully stocked minibar, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi strong enough for you to work from your room, should the need arise.

The grounds are kempt and green, showcasing, as Munsayac noted, not one, but two pools, as well as a roster of other recreational activities. Guests can spend the day biking around the resort, playing table tennis and duck pin bowling, or maybe trying out their green thumb in the garden. When in season, mango picking is also an option, as the area is lush with fruit-bearing trees. Meanwhile, those with a penchant for water sports will surely enjoy hours of snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, and kayaking.

While there is a lot to do (or not do, should you choose to just kick back all day) in the resort itself, the Bluewater Panglao team can also coordinate activities in Bohol and its environs. Fancy a trip to the Chocolate Hills, a river boat cruise along Loboc, or to see the region’s famed tarsiers? No problem, the front desk can arrange all that, and more, for you.

Home-style, homegrown culinary goodness

True to the Bluewater commitment to highlight Filipino fare across all their resorts, the Panglao kitchen serves up an exciting selection of local flavors and food choices. “We try to introduce local colors and flavors, from all over the Philippines, along with the thematic food campaigns and offerings. For example, in Bohol, it’s still about Filipino food, but we take in the local availability of products. Like they have this takla, small crabs which grow in the marsh, it’s unique to Bohol, and they use it in their dishes, like in soup. They make the best of Boholano cuisine, like hinalang na manok (a spicy chicken soup), and ube (purple yam) desserts,” says Munsayac. Travelers who are more accustomed to an international menu, however, need not worry, as there is an array of Intercontinental food choices, too.

Bluewater Panglao’s culinary expertise extends to the many events it caters, in-house, as well. From destination weddings to corporate functions and workshops, the resort brings comfort to appetites hankering for a helping of home-style, homegrown culinary goodness.

Come home to comfort

Yes, comfort is an innate human need—and most people will search high and low to have it. Perhaps this is what sets Bluewater resorts apart: they seem to have an understanding of what comfort means, and how important it is to find it. Come home to comfort; come home to Bluewater Panglao.
