Surrounded by lush forests and magnificent mountains, set against the backdrop of the wondrous Borobudur temple, Plataran Borobudur Resort and Spa will transport you to another time and place, where days unfold gently in an elegant whisper.
Just off the resort’s reception area is a living room straight from a storybook with the most stylish interiors. Designed with Persian carpets, wood and low-key seating, it is reminiscent of an understated apartment you might see in Milan, with just the right touches of modern accents. In the next room, you’ll find a portrait of the resort’s owner with the president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, who might have stayed on the chic grounds.
The resort comprises various Javanese villas, all spacious havens of comfort. The Founder’s Home villa is sophisticated. Minimalist design is interspersed with cozy comfort and a splash of Indonesian craft. The elegant two-bedroom villa includes spacious living areas, a grand dining area, and a private pool. There is also a library with a selection of rare books curated by the resort’s founders. Whether lounging in the living space, strolling on the Borobudur viewing deck or taking a dip in the pool, guests experience the timeless grace of Java with every breath. The resort provides 5-star service, including a private butler, to guests of the villa, which is set in a secluded area with sensational views of Borobudur temple and astounding sunrise views. Amidst this unbelievably beautiful setting, guests experience the utmost peace and privacy, making for a perfect vacation spot for those who want to escape it all.
Other villas include the Residence villa, which has breathtaking views of Menoreh Hills; the Garden Plunge Pool villa, with an outdoor terrace and private plunge pool; and the Executive pool villa, set in lush gardens, with a spacious rain shower bathroom and an outdoor patio.
We dined at the Patio Colonial House, which includes a patio deck and a restaurant with world-class cuisine. You can walk along a corridor stretching between the restaurant’s Joglo and colonial buildings. There is also a pool beside the Patio Colonial House, just in case you want to take a dip while watching the exquisite sunset and the view of the majestic Borobudur temple.
Our meal of traditional Indonesian food was superb. First on the menu was a tasty kupat tahu magelang composed of rice cakes, tofu, bean sprouts and cabbage with peanut sauce. Then we had the soto padang empal kering, or noodles, bean sprouts, cabbage, tomatoes, leeks and onions. Ketchap manis and sambal accompanied the soto. Menthol geol-geol was composed of delicious duck with a green curry sauce. Dessert was scrumptious, called the trio cantik jelita. On the plate was a large scoop of vanilla ice cream in a wafer-like cup, to be eaten with a cake made of eggs and brown sugar, a delicacy made of pandan paste and flour with coconut sugar inside and cantik manis, a flour and sugar pastry with food coloring. Surrounded by the high ceilings, spacious tables, and elegant interiors, the meal was the proper antidote to our tiring day of touring Borobudur temple.
Energized and still awed by the feeling that wherever we stood, Borobudur followed, we set out to sleep early for our experience of a sunrise breakfast the following day.
On the deck of Langit, we witnessed the stars in the sky turn into the morning sun, surrounded by a slew of unique colors–from pink to orange to purple and then finally bright blue as the sun came out. From a distance, we saw Borobudur temple, which had a backdrop of mountains and a foreground of lush forest. It was a splendid experience to dine on cakes, pastries, bread, croissants, and main dishes with the fantastic view. Nature was literally at our feet and as far as the eye could see. The atmosphere is designed for guests to enjoy meals in the peaceful embrace of a sunrise.
Guests can choose from an a la carte menu and a buffet menu. The majestic sunrise breakfast menu included kiwi, watermelon, grapes, strawberries, papayas, pineapples, and oranges. Bacon and eggs and eggs florentine, or smoked salmon with poached eggs, mushrooms, and hollandaise sauce were also served. Danish, toast, and ciabatta were abundant, as was a cake platter of strawberry cake, green tea cake, chocolate cake, and pandan cake. Flavored jams, assorted cheese, olives, salami and even sushi, were all part of the filling meal, served on one long, stylish table. It was a true feast. We ended the meal with sparkling grape juice. Some of us dozed off with full bellies under the sun, the magnificent view in the distance and the fresh air lulling us to slumber.
“We like our guests to feel like this is home. Integration into the local culture involves collaborative activities with the villagers where you can learn craft-making, including batik,” says Plataran Borobudur Resort and Spa and Plataran Heritage Hotel and Convention Center General Manager Sujiani Ani. There are also other activities that the resort offers, such as the Ultimate Fun Package and the Romantic Bliss Retreat package. But we didn’t want to wander off too far from the gorgeous villas, where we relaxed to our heart’s content for just a few days.
