A Thousand Thrills

Scattered across Jakarta’s coast are islands of serenity and great beauty. Just north of the city, Kepulauan Seribu offers enchanting escapes from the urban clamor

While metropolitan Jakarta is as busy as any international, cosmopolitan center, it isn’t exactly bereft of locations where nature and its encompassing beauty still reign. Across the bay from the city is a group of islands where city-weary urbanites can escape to, get lost in a tropical paradise, and commune with nature in a pristine environment.

So, one morning, when the sky was clear and the sun shining majestically across the glittering bay, I hopped on a speedboat to get acquainted with the much-vaunted tropical beauty of “Kepulauan Seribu,” literally meaning: the Thousand Islands scattered in the Bay of Jakarta.

In truth, there are exactly only 110 islands strewn across the sea of clear jade color. Together these islands and the seas around them form the Pulau Seribu National Marine Park in the province of Jakarta. This cluster of islands forms a splendid natural getaway that ranges from a mere half-hour to a three hours boat ride from the north coast of the capital city.

Pulau Bidadari

Pulau Bidadari is a lush forest sanctuary that nurtures a collection of rare and protected trees that grow naturally on its fertile soil. As I walked along the jungle path, the scent of exotic flowers filled the air, and the sounds of birds and insects surrounded me like a symphony of nature. The peach trees, with their delicate pink flowers, the santigi trees, with their gnarled roots that seemed to hold secrets, and the black wood trees, with their smooth ebony trunks, made for a mesmerizing sight.

The island is not only a sanctuary for rare trees but also for exotic birds and reptiles. I spotted a monitor lizard skulking from behind a tree, its beady eyes watching me with suspicion before it scampered back into the undergrowth. The island is home to up to some 50 monitor lizards, some growing as long as two meters. Despite their intimidating size, these majestic creatures added to the charm of the island.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to the ruins of Fort Martello, a historical site that stood in the middle of the jungle. The thick red brick walls of the fort provided a stunning backdrop for photoshoots, and according to superstition, couples who had their photos taken against the fort were guaranteed a long and happy marriage. As I took in the beauty of the fort, I felt a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that we were in a place that was rich in history and romance.

But the highlight of my trip to Bidadari was discovering the secluded beaches on the island. These were pockets of white sandy shores fringed by thick forests and crystal-clear waters. I found a swing hanging from a towering coconut tree, and as I sat there, mesmerized by the beauty around us, a heron plunged into the blue sea, breaking the stillness and adding to the magic of the moment.

Pulau Bidadari is a hidden gem, a tropical paradise that offers a wealth of natural beauty, adventure, and history for those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta. From the rare trees and fascinating wildlife to the stunning beaches and historical ruins, this island will leave you with unforgettable memories and a renewed appreciation for the wonders of nature.

Pulau Pari

As I stepped off the boat and onto the powdery white sand of Pulau Pari, I was immediately struck by the island’s tranquil beauty. Despite its close proximity to Jakarta, the island had a complete island getaway atmosphere that transported me to another world. It was as if the bustling city was a million miles away, and I was surrounded only by the serenity of the sea and the gentle rustling of the palm trees.

I explored the island’s various attractions and activities, but it was the rides on the sandbar that truly made me feel like a child again. As I swung back and forth on the swing, I felt as if I were flying over the crystal-clear waters below. The slide was just as thrilling, and I felt the rush of adrenaline as I slid down and plunged into the refreshing water.
For nature lovers, the underwater scenery offers an enchanting diversity of sea life that surrounded Pari Island. Snorkeling enthusiasts and scuba divers will feel as if they were exploring a hidden world that was all their own.
And then there was the mangrove forest, which I explored with a guide on a traditional fishing boat. As we glided through the calm waters, we were surrounded by the lush greenery of the forest, and I felt as if I were part of the island’s vibrant ecosystem.

As the sun began to set over the island, I realized that Pulau Pari had become more than just a destination for me. It had become a place of discovery, where I had explored new activities, made new memories, and strengthened my bond with nature. I knew that I would always cherish the time I spent on this idyllic island, and I looked forward to returning again someday.

Pulau Tidung

The beautiful shores of Pulau Tidung, inspired in me a compelling sense of wonder and discovery. This place is already famous for its Love Bridge, an 800-meter structure that connects Tidung Kecil with Tidung Besar. It’s said that the bridge got its name from the undying hope of finding true love along this path. As I walked across the bridge, I couldn’t help but feel the romance in the air. The stunning views of the clear ocean below and the coral reefs and fish swimming by were simply breathtaking. The Love Bridge also provided the perfect backdrop for an epic dive shot into the pristine waters.

The magic of Tidung didn’t end there. I discovered Tidung Kecil, an uninhabited island surrounded by a lush mangrove forest. It’s no wonder that the government takes great care to maintain the natural balance around Tidung Besar and Tidung Kecil Islands. The beach on Tidung Kecil was a sight to behold with its stretch of white sand and the clear, aquamarine seas that cradled the coral reefs and tropical fish of amazing colors.

One of the best ways to get around and explore the island is by renting a bike. It’s a great opportunity to interact with the friendly and hospitable locals who are always happy to welcome visitors. And if you’re lucky enough to be there in the morning or evening, the Love Bridge becomes the most romantic spot to witness the stunning sunrise or sunset.

As I left Tidung, I knew that this place had captured my heart. The beauty and wonder of Pulau Tidung had left an indelible mark.

Yes, come and explore the Seribu Islands and let its magic enchant you forever.
