It’s hard not to be enchanted by Ubud. On my first trip to this quaint town in the heart of Bali, I immediately fell in love with the enigmatic aura and graciousness that cloak everything within its breadth. It compels everyone to slow down and embrace a leisurely pace that allows for a profound appreciation of life's simple pleasures. The people here effortlessly radiate warmth, bestowing easy smiles and graceful gestures upon each other and those who are briefly on holiday.
Thankfully, amidst its meteoric rise as a global hotspot, Ubud remains true to its essence as the beating heart of Balinese art and culture, unwavering in its integrity vis-a-vis the changing tides. For me, Ubud is a beckoning invitation to a sanctuary where history, spirituality, and artistic expression harmoniously converge.
Constructed in 1952 under the patronage of the Prince of Ubud, Cokorda Gede Agung Sukawati, this temple stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Bali. The artistic genius of esteemed sculptor and architect, I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, brought forth a temple that harmoniously combines traditional Balinese architecture with intricate detailing, creating a masterpiece that continues to inspire awe.
Approaching the temple, I was greeted by an expansive pond crowded with vibrant pink lotus flowers. A bridge, adorned with statues depicting mythical creatures and divine beings, spans the length of the pond. The true grandeur of Taman Saraswati Temple can be found in the three lavishly embellished doors in front, serving as an invitation to step into the realm of the Goddess of Knowledge, Saraswati. The ornaments adorning the doors depict intricate carvings inspired by Hindu mythology, providing a testament to the artistic prowess of Bali's cultural heritage and a deeper connection to the spiritual essence of the temple.
The construction of the Ubud Royal Palace dates back to the 17th century when it was commissioned by the nobleman of the Gelgel Kingdom. The Ubud Royal Palace exemplifies the intricate craftsmanship and architectural finesse that characterize Balinese artistry for centuries. The palace features traditional Balinese architectural elements, with elaborately carved wooden doors, ornate stone carvings, and beautifully adorned pavilions.
In addition to its architectural splendor, the palace also serves as a venue for cultural events and performances. Traditional dance performances, gamelan concerts, and other artistic showcases take place within the palace grounds, allowing visitors to witness the living heritage of Bali's performing arts.
Near Ubud Market’s entrance, the magnificent statue of Ida Cokorda Agung Sukawati proudly stands. Sukawati is a visionary and historical figure who played a pivotal role in developing of cultural tourism in Bali. Nestled strategically amidst the thriving art-producing villages, this bustling marketplace promises an extraordinary retail experience, offering a treasure trove of Balinese handicrafts and souvenirs.
Inside the market, each step brought me to a world of artistry, showcasing an array of exquisite items that embody the essence of Balinese craftsmanship. Colorful shawls flutter in the breeze. Graceful statues, carved with meticulous precision, exude an aura of timeless beauty. Woven bags beckon with artisanal charm. Handcrafted goods tempt tourists with their exotic allure. Leaving the Ubud Market, I took with me not just the horde of products I purchased, but also a deeper appreciation for the beauty and craftsmanship that defines Balinese art.
Nestled amidst picturesque rice paddies, Visesa Ubud Resort is a haven inspired by Balinese culture and design, encapsulating the enchantment and tranquility that define Ubud. Within the resort, guests are able to immerse themselves in nature's embrace, where the sight of farmers tending to the fields or harvesting golden grains becomes a daily spectacle. Those indulging in an early breakfast will be delighted by the procession of ducks waddling near the fields, guided by a skilled farmhand.

To truly embrace the spirit of Ubud, a visit to Visesa Balinese Healing & Spa is a must. Set amidst the natural surroundings, the spa offers pampering treatments rooted in traditional Bali Usada principles. Here, guests can rejuvenate their mind, body, and soul, immersing themselves in a holistic wellness experience that honors Balinese traditions.
Situated along the vibrant main street of Ubud, is an unassuming warung whose single culinary offering has captured the hearts and palates of locals and travelers alike. Situated just opposite the regal Puri Saren Royal Palace, Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka 3 boasts a singular masterpiece: babi guling, the succulent roasted suckling pig. The lure of what the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain hailed as “the best pork in the world” tempted us to go inside and sample the touted succulence of this roasted treat.
I was told that each pork carcass is carefully tended over an open flame as the whole pig undergoes a slow, scrumptious transformation, its skin turning into an irresistibly crispy coat while the meat cooks into tender perfection. On the table, the morsel, accompanied by sambal matah—a Balinese raw chili paste—did rouse the palate with a fiery burst of spice. But it is the roasted pork skin that delivers an immensely satisfying crunch with each and every bite.
In Ubud, the rhythm of creativity, spirituality, and natural beauty beats more palpably. As I reflect on my time in this quaint, welcoming town, I am filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude for the captivating experiences and unforgettable moments that I have gained. Ubud truly resonates within me, leaving an indelible mark and beckoning me to return.

When in Kuta, Come to Mama’sWaitresses smiling broadly and wearing cute, traditional dirndl dresses might be a common sight in the biergartens in Munich, but in Kuta? Nestled within Kuta's Lawalon Complex, Mama's German Restaurant captures attention with its beaming servers donning the traditional German costume. Ditto the colorful life-sized cow standing at the entrance to greet customers.
Dining at Mama's, whether you embrace the German spirit or not, guarantees a delightful experience. To give us a sampling of Mama’s delicious flavors, Stefan Mueller, the Corporate General Manager of PT Soejasch Bali (the company that owns the restaurant, among other ventures) ordered Mama’s famous succulent pork knuckle for us to sample.
“Each generous portion—weighing 1.2 kilograms—is created from imported ham hock. These are carefully slow-cooked over two days, then roasted in the oven for another hour to give the skin an irresistible crackling touch,” he described. The hefty portion came with a generous amount of sauerkraut and mashed potato. Then, at the table, a skilled kitchen staff expertly deboned the knuckle, leaving us ready to indulge.
The restaurant's name pays homage to Ibu Endang Suciati, affectionately known as "Mama," who founded the establishment. Since its inception in 1985, Mama's has been owned and operated by PT Soejasch Bali (a company established by her entrepreneur husband, Reinhold Jantzen) whose expertise is producing and importing quality meats and sausages. Thus, Mama's German Restaurant offers an impressive selection of flavorful sausages. The extensive menu entices with a range of mouthwatering options, ranging from mouthwatering hamburgers and pizzas to comforting soups and fresh salads.
