Ralph’s Wines and Spirits: A Family’s Legacy Poured into Every Glass

From its humble beginnings to becoming a revered name in the wine and spirits industry, Ralph’s Wines and Spirits is a story of exquisite beverages and a legacy crafted and preserved through the decades.

Ralph Joseph’s journey wasn’t just about setting up a business; it was about weaving a legacy that would eventually become Ralph’s Wines and Spirits.

His inspiration came from a family history rich with entrepreneurship and independence. “Before Ralph’s Wines and Spirit, I called the company Philippine Wine Merchants (PWM),” Ralph says, linking the present to a storied past.

Why Philippine Wine Merchants? Because the first wine company in the Philippines, established in 1907, was called Manila Wine Merchants (MWM) and owned by Americans.

This name choice shows Ralph’s intent to honor the Philippines while making his own mark. MWM’s American ownership inspired Ralph to create a legacy that was uniquely Filipino.

Reflecting on his early influences, Ralph shares, “Bobby (his eldest brother, the late Robert Joseph Jr.) started working young, at the age of 12, and he told me, ‘Never work for anybody.’” This piece of advice stuck with him through the years, laying the groundwork for his entrepreneurial path.

Ralph’s career path took an unexpected turn when he indeed decided not to show up for a job he had landed, choosing instead to follow his elder brother’s advice of setting up his own business. This choice was supported by his natural talent for business, which manifested early when he would sell watches bought by his uncle from Hong Kong to make a little allowance.

With a clear vision and determination, Ralph set out to create his wine and spirits venture without relying on external help. “When I finished school, I immediately copied my uncle’s corporation papers. I didn’t get a lawyer,” he explains. This DIY approach extended to raising capital, where he managed to gather 25,000 pesos from family contributions to start his business.

Setting up a shop in Pasay City, where his family-owned Tamaraw Studios once stood, Ralph began with a modest space but a grand vision. With a budget, half of which went to construction, Ralph had just enough to bring his vision to life.

The challenge of import restrictions and a market flooded with counterfeit products did not deter Ralph. Instead, it fueled his determination to provide authentic and quality wines and spirits.

On November 17, 1975, PWM opened its doors for the first time—a date coinciding with his brother Raymond’s birthday, adding a personal touch to this milestone.

Despite a slow start—zero sales on the first day—Ralph remained undaunted. “The second day, I had 500 pesos. Not bad for a second day,” Ralph recounts with a sense of accomplishment.

Today, Ralph’s Wines and Spirits is a household name with sixteen branches nationwide. This growth from a modest start in Pasay City to an industry leader offering esteemed brands from the world’s top vineyards, distilleries, and breweries showcases Ralph’s vision, perseverance, and commitment to providing quality products.

Ralph's Wine and Spirits isn't just a store; it's a celebration of fine wine and community. Ralph's offers a curated selection of wines, spirits, sake, beer and whiskey from top global producers.

The narrative takes an interesting turn as Ralph discusses his foray into event hosting, particularly the Grand Wine Experience. Conceived in the Mandarin Hotel, this event reflected Ralph’s grand vision—offering wines from 15 countries paired with five authentic dishes per country, a concept that was as ambitious as it was innovative.

However, not all was smooth-sailing. The variety of foods led to logistical challenges, with some dishes running out while others becoming overly abundant. Ralph’s solution? Buffet. This pivot highlights a key theme in Ralph’s story: the willingness to adapt and change course to ensure success.

The Grand Wine Experience is now recognized as Asia’s largest and longest-standing wine event.
Ralph’s Wines and Spirits distinguishes itself through meticulous attention to storage, a keen understanding of industry trends, and an underlying philosophy that wine enjoyment is deeply personal.

Ralph emphasizes the importance of wine storage, which he considers a critical aspect of his business. “Our wine storage is very good,” he asserts, noting that they have been storing wines in ideal temperature-controlled conditions to ensure quality.

When asked about staying updated with the latest trends in the wine industry, Ralph simplifies it to two key elements: products and packaging. He argues that while wine has remained consistent for centuries, its presentation and preservation have evolved, highlighting the importance of technological advancements in refrigeration and packaging.

Ralph’s approach to food and wine pairing is refreshingly straightforward and personal, reflecting his lifetime of passion for wine. He believes, “Wine is what you like, and what is good. There is really no best,” emphasizing personal preference. Ralph encourages both novices and connoisseurs to trust their palates.

Dispelling traditional rules around wine pairing, Ralph notes that white wine was once more favored. This changed with the “French paradox,” which praised the heart-health benefits of red wine, leading to its surge in popularity. Ralph challenges this norm, asserting, “White wine goes with everything, even with red meat.”

At this point, we were served the Raphael panizza. The crisp pizza dough was perfectly layered with a blend of different cheeses and herbs and topped with succulent shrimp and rich tomato sauce. It was complemented by a refreshing bowl of arugula and alfalfa sprouts and paired beautifully with a cold Sapporo premium draft beer.

The food, from classic cheese and charcuterie to innovative panizza and tender beef, offers a culinary adventure that tantalizes the taste buds and complements the experience.

The Cheese and Charcuterie Tray offered a delightful mixture of fresh deli cuts and cheeses, enhanced by the crisp notes of white wine.

Finally, the Tenderloin Salpicao, consisting of beef tenderloin cooked in Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and butter, was tender and bursting with savory flavors.
But beyond the flavors and aromas, Ralph also believes in the social aspect of wine. “Wine is a good conversation starter,” he declares. From small gatherings with friends to large events, wine has the power to bring people together and create connections.

As a testament to this belief, Ralph hosts wine tastings and events at his store, nurturing a sense of community around the shared love for wine. With each glass raised in celebration, new friendships are formed and old ones strengthened.

Ralph’s Wines and Spirits is not just a business but also a gathering place where people can come together to enjoy good food, great conversations, and, of course, excellent wine, spirits, sake, beer, and whiskey.
